Welcome to the midway

Southwest Ohio was once home to over a dozen traditional amusement parks in its history, but only a few would come to mind today. Kings Island would surely roll off the tongue and perhaps Coney Island would come coasting not too far behind. But what about Frankie's? Lakeside? Chester Park? Most of us may not have even heard of these parks let alone be familiar with their rich and interesting history.

That's where the Southwest Ohio Amusement Park Historical Society comes coasting into the station. Our aim is to collect and preserve these dying memories of summer fun before they fade away into the sunset taking with them their merry-go-round's and Ferris wheels, dark rides and roller coasters. The history of the amusement park in Southwest Ohio is important to us and the industry. (As a matter of fact, the lap bar commonly used in roller coasters was invented in Dayton). Help us preserve this heritage and educate others about the proud part their home towns played in creating these wonderful parks.

If you have information, memories, photographs or memorabilia on the parks covered in the Southwest Ohio Amusement Park Historical Society, or know of any parks that we may not be aware of, please let us know. You may contact the SOAPHS at at soaphs@lycos.com.
