millbrook park

Millbrook Amusement Park opened in 1902 and was located along the Ohio River in new Boston just outside Portsmouth. A major flood in 1913 left destroyed a 60 foot high side friction coaster that was the tallest coaster around at the time. The coaster featured a unique layout that differed from the typical Figure 8 found on many coasters during this era.

Millbrook, named for a number of steel mills in the area, was also home to a carousel , theatre, a ballroom , boating, picnic groves and a baseball/softball ball field. The park was forced to close after the flood of 1937 completely engulfed the park and destroyed most of the buildings and attractions. The land was eventually used by adjoining steel mills.

Today, only a couple structures remain next to the Wal-Mart plaza and the large recessed area of land north of the park was home to a large lake. The coaster sat south of what is now a series of telephone pole racks.  A liquor store uses the former trolley station just north of the coaster site.

The park is also depicted on the famous Portsmouth floodwalls.
